As in any sport, equipment is essential to success and consistency, especially on the shooting field. We want to make the game as simple and easy as possible to break more targets. The equipment that we use can make this mission easier or harder than necessary. I shoot with the equipment that I feel is the best in the game which helps me break more targets.
The Gun:
It all starts with the gun and the gun that I choose to shoot is the Kolar Max Skeet gun. The gun is the most important piece of equipment that anyone can have and I am not talking about how high of a grade gun you purchase, it is the brand that counts, not the price tag. The three main points that I look for in a gun are:
- Reliability- You must have a gun that you can rely on no matter what the conditions are. The Kolar gun has been extremely reliable for me and the cost to maintain the gun is very minimal. The annual service that should be performed every 1-3 years (depending on how many rounds you shoot per year) is very inexpensive. The gun itself is a very safe gun due to the mono-block assembly and all of the engineering that went in to the gun. It is a very solid and reliable gun.
- Comfort level- You have to shoot a gun that is very comfortable to you. The Kolar comes in a variety of sizes and weights to fit your needs. The gun has been designed to balance more efficiently than any other gun on the market, in my opinion. Kolar has a variety of barrel lengths and weights to fit the particular specs you are seeking.
- Point-ability- With the engineering put into the gun, Kolar has made the gun point more efficiently than any other gun on the market. Due to the balance, the gun feels like an extension of your own body to make the move much easier.
I truly feel that just about anyone can shoot this gun and to ensure that you shoot it to your best, I offer a service to set up the gun for you and work with you when you purchase a Kolar shotgun. If you are to purchase a Kolar, I offer to meet you at a predetermined place and setup a date to pattern/setup the new gun once it arrives!

Ammunition:
I use Remington STS target loads with #9 shot. This shell, I believe, is the best available in the skeet market today. Offering very consistent loads which help in patterning and building confidence with better breaks. I find that Remington ammunition hits the targets harder than any other shell manufacturer on the market and give me the most consistent patterns on paper. I shoot all STS shells and use only #9 shot all the way across the board for singles and doubles.
Shooting Glasses:
The glasses that you use are another huge help to the mission we are after… breaking more targets. What better way to break more targets than to see them more clearly no matter what the conditions are! Having the correct shooting glasses and lens color helps you acquire the targets more efficiently and ultimately shoot better. The person that I trust the most when it comes to having the right setup for shooting glasses is Allen Lehman at Lehman Optical. With a wide variety of frames and lens colors, Lehman Optical can help fulfill your shooting needs.
Shooting Accessories:
Lonesome Charlie has been in the shooting accessory business for more 30 years. It is who I trust to make very high quality shooting bags, pouches, belts and other shooting accessories. Every shooter is not complete until they have a pouch and bag to carry to the field when going to shoot their event. For more information on this equipment, please visit Lonesome Charlie’s Website.
Target Talk:
When shooting all over the country, you get a chance to see a number of different gun clubs. The positives include meeting lots of new people and experiencing so many great places. However, the weather is not always a constant where you travel. That is why I prefer the White Flyer target over the rest of the target manufacturers. I find that the White Flyer target flies the most consistent in the various conditions that we may face on the skeet field. Visit White Flyer’s Website for more details.
